Penn Gywa Latch Door Plate

Wrought bronze door plate with latch instead of keyhole. Although many manufacturers made a very similar design, this best seems to match the Gywa design made by Penn. Cir. 1927. The door plate measures 7 1/2″h x 2 5/8″w. The center to center distance between the doorknob hole and the latch is 3″. The latch consists of a brass thumbturn with a flat extension on the back. It measures 1/4″w. and extends 3/4″ from the back of the door plate. These thumbturn latch door plates were often used for bathrooms so the door could be locked from the inside.

Penn

Penn Hardware Company began in Reading Pennsylvania in 1877 under the name Penn Hardware Works. The founders were two brothers, Charles Raymond Heizmann and Albert Aloysius Heizmann. They produced brass and steel hardware products. In 1896, the company incorporated under the name Penn Hardware Company and it expanded to include more industrial products. The business closed in 1954.
