window number tacks

Window number tacks are small, numbered metal pins traditionally used to mark wood window sashes for easy reinstallation after removal. Common in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially in homes with double-hung sash windows, these tacks helped ensure that upper and lower sashes were returned to their correct positions after painting or repair. Typically made of brass or steel, the tacks were stamped with numbers (often 1–20 or higher) and gently hammered into the edge or side of each sash. Today, they are valued by preservationists and restorers for maintaining historical accuracy in window restoration projects.
