Russell and Erwin Villa Black Enamel (Jet) Doorknob Set

Black enamel doorknob set with bronze plated necks. Some of the plating has worn off.  Cir. 1890. Referred to as Jet, this type of doorknob was widely produced throughout the 1900s as a standard knob by man different companies. It was used with the most basic to the most decorative door plates. This particular set was originally used with Russell and Erwin Villa components, although it could be used with a variety of other antique door plates. The knobs measure 2 1/4″diam. The base of the neck measures 3/4″diam. which is slightly larger than some, so make sure it will fit with your door plate if using a different type. The doorknob set comes complete with an adjustable spindle that fits doors 2- 2 7/8″ thick(measured without door plates). If a different sized spindle is needed, please notify us. We may be able to accommodate different lengths.

This Russell and Erwin Villa Black Enamel (Jet) Doorknob Set is an antique item and may show wear due to age. This may include scratches, pitting, patina, finish loss, rust or other general wear. We attempt to include any significant damage beyond regular wear within the description. We make every effort to clean as much paint, dirt and rust off of items while still leaving as much of the original patina as possible. Photos shown are of actual item you will receive. If multiples are ordered, a photo showing additional pieces will be sent for approval.

Russell and Erwin / Russwin

Russell and Erwin Manufacturing was established in 1839 in New Britain, CT. under the name of Stanley, Russell & Company. The founders include Henry E. Russell, Cornelius B. Erwin and Frederick T. Stanley. Upon Stanley’s withdrawal just one year later, it became Matteson, Russell and Company to reflect a new partnership with Smith Matteson and John H. Bowen. Six years later, the company officially becomes Russell & Erwin. In 1851, it becomes Russell & Erwin Manufacturing Company. They merge with P. & F. Corbin in 1902, but continue to produce under the Russell and Erwin name. American Hardware and Russwin were also brand names used off and on in conjunction with the Russell and Erwin name. By 1964, the division again separated and was purchased by Emhart Manufacturing under the name Russwin. It continues today under the name Corbin Russwin, owned by Assa Abloy.
