Russell & Erwin Arabian Doorknob

Decorative heavy steel doorknob made by Russell & Erwin. Arabian design. The design features a beaded ring around the center surrounded by floral and leaf elements.  Cir. 1897-1904. Dark patina. This doorknob was originally bronze plated, but most of the plating has worn off. Small remnants remain. The doorknob measures 2 1/4″diam. This doorknob takes a standard square shaft.

Russell and Erwin / Russwin

Russell and Erwin Manufacturing was established in 1839 in New Britain, CT. under the name of Stanley, Russell & Company. The founders include Henry E. Russell, Cornelius B. Erwin and Frederick T. Stanley. Upon Stanley’s withdrawal just one year later, it became Matteson, Russell and Company to reflect a new partnership with Smith Matteson and John H. Bowen. Six years later, the company officially becomes Russell & Erwin. In 1851, it becomes Russell & Erwin Manufacturing Company. They merge with P. & F. Corbin in 1902, but continue to produce under the Russell and Erwin name. American Hardware and Russwin were also brand names used off and on in conjunction with the Russell and Erwin name. By 1964, the division again separated and was purchased by Emhart Manufacturing under the name Russwin. It continues today under the name Corbin Russwin, owned by Assa Abloy.
