Monche und Strauchritter

Book Monche und Strauchritter:Eine Tibetfahrt auf Schliechwegen by Alexandra David-Neel. Published in 1933 by F. U. Broadhaus of Leipzig. 290 pages in beautiful scripted German. This book was at one point owned by the the Library of Congress. It has a deaccession stamp from the Library noting that it was a duplicate copy.  The book has an ink inscription on the first page, it looks like it was a birthday gift in 1939.

The cover shows wear and some fading, particularly on the spine. I reinforced one area near the bottom with archival book binding glue where it was starting to split. Inside, the binding is in good shape and the pages are in overall good condition.

The title translates to “Monks and Bush Thieves: A Trip to Tibet on Secret Routes” (bush thieves being roaming robbers who traveled on horseback and were known to hide behind bushes before robbing travelers). The history of the author is quite fascinating. She traveled to Tibet as a woman when foreigners were not allowed. She wrote multilple books about her travels and is noted not only as a writer and explorer, but as a European turned Buddhist, anarchist, and an opera singer!
