Reading Decorative Entry Door Plate

Early highly decorative cast bronze entry door plate by Reading.  Eastlake style with a number of motifs represented and dense decoration over the entire surface. This plate is oversized for the outside of an entry door.  Cir.  ~1883. Unique shaping. Double Keyholes with bottom keyhole having a pivoting cover. This type of setup was common on hotels or apartments where there would be a master landlord key and a different tenant key.  It is marked 252 on the back. The plate measures 7 1/4″h x 2″w.

Reading

Reading Hardware began in 1872 in Reading, Pennsylvania. It produced both basic and highly decorative builders hardware. Reading’s hardware was used in many notable buildings including the White House in Washington, D.C. The operation closed in 1950.
