Corbin Athens Exterior Plate Set
A pair of wrought bronze egg and dart design door plates made to go on an exterior door. One is larger, for the outside of the door, the other is standard size. Most manufacturers made a version of this egg and dart design between the early to mid 1900’s. The size of these most closely resembles Corbin’s Athens design. The large door plate measures 8 1/2″h x 2 3/4″w. It has a 2 3/4″ center to center distance between the doorknob hole and keyhole. The smaller plate measures 6 1/2″h x 2 3/8″w(slightly different than the catalogue measurements, but these were a set). The doorknob and keyholes line up with the larger plate. Both plates have a coppery color with patina. The smaller plate may have had a flashed copper finish applied over the bronze, as some bronze is showing through near the heavy wear area where the doorknob would have been.
There is a little but of uneven wear on the cup of the large plate, but this should not affect the functionality.

Corbin
P&F Corbin was founded by brothers Philip and Frank Corbin in New Britain, CT. in 1851. Interestingly, Philip previously worked for the company that would become Russell and Erwin, which Corbin would merge with in 1902. It ran with a number of subsidiary companies in the 1900’s including Corbin Cabinet Lock Co., Corbin Screw Company and even a Corbin Motor Vehicle Corporation! Corbin is still in business today under ownership of Assa Abloy under the name Corbin Russwin.
