Yale & Towne Rice Doorknob

Antique bronze doorknob made by Yale & Towne. Cir. 1889. Rice design. The doorknob features interesting shaping, with a convex top. It is highly decorated on top and on the bottom. It appears to mount with a screwless shank and spindle. The description of the mount can be seen in the catalogue page pictured here. The base does twist to provide opening and compression of the hole. A standard shaft fits snuggly into it when open. The doorknob measures 2 1/4″ diam.

There is a flattened area on the edge of one side approximately 1/2″l. If the knob is mounted with the flat area to the bottom, it would barely be noticeable.

Yale

Yale Lock began around 1840 under Linus Yale Sr. in Stamford, CT. It specialized in handmade high security bank locks at the time. In 1852, Linus’ son joined the operation. In 1868, Henry Towne joined forces with Yale Jr. to become Yale & Towne. By 1894, Yale & Towne was a large name in the hardware industry and they purchased Branford Lock Works, incorporating some of their designs into their catalogues. In 2000, Assa Abloy acquired Yale but continues to produce under the Yale name.
